Getting Rid of Acne Is Going to be Easier With Blue Light Acne Treatments
One of the more effective ways to eliminate acne is with blue light therapy. You need to understand why blue light is so effective against acne.
Many adults and approximately 85% of adolescents have suffered acne outbreaks. Pimples and other sores result from pores that become blocked up with a mass of skin oil (sebum) and dead skin cells. Bacteria in the plugged up pore start multiplying and aggravate adjacent tissues. The irritated areas are visibly red and feel sore and turn out to be the pimples we associate with acne.
There are several conventional treatments associated with acne prevention. First, cleansing is used to eliminate excess skin oil on the surface. A mild anti-bacterial cream or gel is then used to kill surface bacteria. Then a mild exfoliant cream or gel is used to make it easier to loosen dead skin cells so they can be washed away. By eliminating the three components necessary for acne (excess oil, bacteria, and dead skin cells) most acne can be prevented.
Whiteheads or blackheads are the preliminary expressions of a plugged up pore. The location of the blockage is the chief difference between a whitehead and a blackhead. With a blackhead, the clog is close to the surface where it will become oxidized and darken. When the clog is further down into the pore, the surface can shut in around the pore keeping it light in color which produces a whitehead.
Cells adjoining the pore become red, irritated and constitute a pimple because the bacteria inside the plugged up pore start multiplying. The blemish can become more serious when the infection spreads away from the pore. For example, pressure on a pimple may force infected oil deeper to reach the sebaceous gland or even into deeper skin layers and form a cyst.
You can understand how essential it is to eliminate the bacteria at the site of the pimple. This will reduce the irritation and reduce the size and intensity of the blemish. Though some anit-biotic prescription medicines are prescribed for serious acne, a lot of people will benefit greatly from more localized treatments.
Acne light treatment is one such localized treatment. Direct exposure to sunlight is known to relieve acne. But, full spectrum sunlight can damage the skin. So, scientists have found out more about specific spectral ranges to determine what exactly is effective against acne. One early investigation established that light within the blue-violet color range was particularly useful. This color range impacts an organic compound within the acne bacteria. This porphyrin releases a signlet oxygen that eventually kills the bacteria.
Because acne bacteria multiply rapidly, three treatments on consecutive days tend to be required to kill all the bacteria in a blemish. With the bacteria eliminated, the irritation is eliminated and the healing process can take place to restore the normal skin condition.
Of course, the blue light could be delivered by full spectrum sunlight. But now dedicated lasers, fluorescent lamps, and even LEDs (light emitting diodes) are used to provide the exact wavelength of light that is most useful. Many dermatologists use the Dusa Blue Light which is just like an array of fluorescent lights that emit light with a 400nm wavelength. Often your dermatologist will apply aminolevulinic acid (brand name Levulan) to affected areas prior to the blue light therapy. The Levulan is photosensitive and under blue light helps damage certain skin cells.
A single treatment in a dermatologists office may cost $200 or more. But, there are a variety of devices you can buy to be used right in your own home that many people find helpful. You can find numerous devices on the market ranging is price from around $40 to several hundred dollars.
Keep in mind that blue light acne treatment will not produce instant results as the skin needs to heal. But, compared to treatments like benzoyl peroxide, lots of people find blue light acne treatment to be less irritating to the skin and more effective at eliminating acne.
