Here's Why Blue Light Acne Treatment is So Effective at Getting Rid of Acne

One of the more effective methods to eliminate acne is with blue light therapy. You should understand why blue light is so successful against acne.

Acne is a common skin condition among adolescents and some adults. Surplus skin oil (sebum) mixes with dead skin cells to block the pores and create pimples. Bacteria living in the plugged up pore start multiplying and irritate neighboring tissues. The irritated spots are visibly red and feel sore and turn out to be the pimples we associate with acne.

The vast majority of acne prevention measures make use of several procedures. Getting rid of surplus oils from the skin is the most important step. Bacteria on the skin in then killed with a mild anti-bacterial gel or cream. Dead skin cells are loosened with an exfoliant so they can be washed away. By eliminating the three components necessary for acne (surplus oil, bacteria, and dead skin cells) most acne will be prevented.

Whiteheads or blackheads are the preliminary expressions of a plugged up pore. These are tiny lesions and are different because of the position of the plug. With a blackhead, the blockage is near the surface where it will become oxidized and darken. If the blockage descends a short distance into the pore the top of the pore can close over the plug and the plug continues to be light colored and forms a whitehead.

As the bacteria start to multiple in the blocked pore the cells adjacent to the pore grow irritated and become red, forming a pimple. The blemish can grow more severe if the infection spreads outside the pore. Pressure on the pimple can shove the infection into the sebaceous gland and perhaps rip open the cell structure allowing the infection to spread to lower layers of the skin.

You can understand how essential it is to eliminate the bacteria at the site of the pimple. This will reduce the irritation and decrease the dimensions and intensity of the blemish. Though some anit-biotic prescription medications are prescribed for severe acne, most people can benefit greatly from more localized therapies.

One such treatment is acne light treatment. While sunlight has always been know to help acne, scientists examined specific colors of the spectrum to determine more particularly the range of colors that are truly effective. One of the first groups to delve into this topic discovered that light in the violet range activated an organic compound, a porphyrin, in the acne causing bacteria, Propionibacterium acnes. A singlet oxygen is released by a porphyrin component comprising the bacteria which helps kill the bacteria.

Since acne bacteria multiply rapidly, several treatments on consecutive days tend to be required to kill all the bacteria in a blemish. After the bacteria are eliminated, the swelling decreases and the cells start to heal.

The blue light may be delivered by lasers, light-emitting diodes (LEDs), fluorescent lamps, as well as bright full spectrum light. Numerous dermatologists use the Dusa Blue Light which is just like an array of fluorescent lights that emit light with a 400nm wavelength. In addition, many dermatologists use Levulan (aminolevulinic acid) on problem areas before the light therapy. The aminolevulinic acid is a photo sensitizing agent that under blue light causes damage to certain skin cells.

A single therapy session in a dermatologists office may cost $200 or more. But, there are numerous devices you may buy to be used right in your own home that many people find effective. Competition is keeping the price for many of the devices in a reasonable range from around $40 to $300 or so.

Remember that blue light acne treatment will not produce instant results as the skin must heal. But, in comparison to treatments like benzoyl peroxide, many individuals have found blue light acne treatment to be less irritating to the skin and more effective at eliminating acne.
