A Few Differences Between DLO Cable and Welding Cable
What is the difference between DLO cable and welding cables? Both are single conductor cables but that is where the likeness ends. Diesel locomotive cable is available from 10 awg up to 777.7 MCM. This cable is approved for use up to 90 degrees Celsius and 2000 volt.
Primary uses include of course diesel locomotives as well as oil and gas rigs, automotive leads, mining and excavation equipment and shipyards. There is usually an inner insulation as well as outer jacket which offers tremendous impact and abrasion resistance.
Welding cable is generally available from 6 awg up to 500 MCM. While not generally as rugged as dlo cable, welding cable can also used in situations where power generation is needed. Many folks use this cable if they need to run generators or similar type equipment. This cable is usually approved for use to 600 volts and 90 degree Celsius. When you are going to be in a situation where the cable will be severely abused, DLO cable will be a better choice.
With that in mind it should be a bit easier for you to choose and pick the right cable for your needs. By going with diesel locomotive cable over welding cable you can be confident that even though it is a bit of overkill, you will not have to be concerned about the potential of the cable failing while under load. You will pay a little more up front for the DLO, but if your cable continues to fail and you have to keep buying new material, think of how much that will cost between product and the labor to get it done.
Delco Wire and Cable inventories each type of cable in all conductor sizes. We do not charge to cut to (your specific length|length for you} and there are no minimum orders.
