Rubber Bracelets Bounce From Craze To Charity

Rubber Bracelets began as a punk rock anti-fashion, anti-establishment statement in the late 1970's - early 1980's. At first, black, rubber 0-rings were worn as wristbands. These wristbands depicted the anti-jewelry sentiment, as rubber has no value whatsoever or status when compared with precious metals such as gold, silver, and platinum.

They became highly popular in the 1980's after they were donned by famous people during their concerts and films, but these wristbands weren't really rubber, they were silicone; these days they're still made from silicone. Around the same time, jelly bracelets grew to become a hot item; thin rubber bands that came in many opaque and translucent colors. The translucent ones could even be found with glitter embedded in them. These exciting new novelties could be bought anywhere; drug stores, gum machines, mail order, or off friends. The object was to don as many as one possibly could, at times in the hundreds. It was quite common to swap and share between friends.

Rubber Band Bracelets (real rubber), made their first appearance in the late 1990's. Banded vegetable bundles provided the heavy rubber bands needed to be placed around the wrist. However, this trend didn't last long simply because real rubber will snap and stick to the skin, it is really quite irritating, and breaks down rapidly from body oils and perspiration.

Again, this craze had its faults, and faded into history. The next common bracelet craze was that of the Jelly Bracelets that came in distinctive colors and became known as Sex Bracelets. The different colors, as you may have suspected, depicted a certain sex act the person was willing to perform. An intrigued person would just have to approach the wearer, snap the band of his/her choosing, and he/she would become the person receiving that particular deed.

Young people being the way they are, came up with the sex bracelet code breakdown and it was swiftly spread amongst themselves and posted on websites what the various colors represented. There were assorted connotations and some people made their very own, yet it was recognized what the person was advertising. Needless to say, it wasn't long before sex bracelets were forbidden from the schools, but one can still use the internet and investigate the various colors and meanings.

If you didn't feel like buying jelly bands, there are instructions available on how to make one. One set of directions required slicing thin strands of rubber from an old tire with a very sharp blade. Once completed, the strands can be braided or woven into your desired style.

Another unique way to make a bracelet is to unroll 3 prophylactics, using as many color combinations as desired, and braid them together; the more color and texture, the better. Once completed, thread a metal clasp onto both ends to help keep it secure and, voila! You're now the proud owner of your own exclusively unique Jelly Bracelet.

Like every other craze, this one seems to come and go with assorted messages. In 2004, Lance Armstrong joined forces with Nike and made the LiveStrong yellow band that now signifies the message of Armstrong's cancer research foundation. Anyone can make one and anyone can also have one made. They're fun, they're attractive and the offer a constructive goal too. They're commonly used by charity organizations to fundraise, because they are inexpensive, have high profit margins, and have the additional bonus of spreading their message further and longer than a regular fundraiser would. While wearing a silicone bracelet, one is in vogue while advertising a message that could be vitally important to someone else.
